Message to any young folk. Your a kid for a very short time. The days, weeks, years seem to last forever but they really don't. Cherish this time, don't be in a hurry to grow up because adulthood sneaks up on you and lasts the rest of your life. Then those days you were an innocent kid seem like a distant memory. BTW, i was 10 in 1979 and remember the music and times.

Damn. This song is so different than anything I've heard. It's making me feel nostalgic for things that haven't happened yet, WHAT.

I knew them when I lived in Chicago right before they made it big. Still have the demo tape they sold when they played gigs. Billy was dating our friend Kris and that's how we got to know them. They did end up marrying and divorcing. I had moved away by then. It was unreal hearing them on the radio for the first time. My God, the memories...

This song gives me memories of playing with friends not knowing it’ll be the last day we hangout before life hits.

The 90s were the last batch of teens who lived 'off the grid'. When you did crazy things like they do in this video, nobody ever interrupted it with a phonecall or text. You had no compulsion to 'share' the moment on facebook or instagram, it was only shared with those who were there, and maybe with a story or two the following day. Yes, life off of the grid was fun.

When he says "cool kids never have the time" just reminds me of my reckless teenage years. Breaking into pools, drinking 40z the forest or rooftops with a group of friends, abandon places. I was known as the Stoop Kid. Had the livest stoop in the whole block.I felt so cool! Now I'm a stay at home mom and engaged. Glad I lived my life to the fullest before I settled down! And part of it was with my Fiance too. We were known as the chillest couple when I was 19 years old.

I may very well be the oldest one to post here. I love this song. I was 21 in 1979, and already been in service, but this song makes think about my teen years in the early seventies. Great song.

Thus song came out in 1996, 17 years after 1979. I'm 34, 17 years ago I *was* 17 and this song and video makes me pine for those days.

Being a teenager is simultaneously the worst and best time of your life. Whether a particular girl likes you is the most important thing in your life, now it's your mortgage.

If some teenager is reading this - don't squander your youth, enjoy it. Ask that girl out, join that club, push your boundaries, because tomorrow you'll be 50 and no one will remember if you failed and otherwise you'll be filled with regret if you don't.

I’m 17, and I’m often sad of how my life is lonely, sad, and boring. I barely have friends. I wish I had friends like those in the video. Whenever I listen to this song, I get melancholy

I was 20 years old in 1979, I heard this song when I turned 40 (midlife crisis) and thought about 1979 and how simple it was. Now at 60 I listen to it and only feel FREE from the struggles of my past. Great song in the never ending circle. 1995-1999 had some of the best music, much better than the 60s.

I was in a journeys shoe store and this song came on. There was this undeniably cute guy behind the counter and he started singing it. I worked at the jcpennys right next to journeys and was on break. I had seen him a bunch of times but never really cared. But the way he got so excited over SP sparked a conversation. I asked him if he liked them and he said "billy corgan is my dad" and I was like "ha same" and then we just started talking about SP. He knew so much about them. I ended up staying 30 mins over my break time. Got lost in time talking to him. I ended up buying some socks that I didn't need just to make it look like I had a purpose to be there. He asked me for my number for the rewards card. I then said "you know, you can text me on that number too. Anytime" and then I said "wow that was corny" and he said "it was corny but I'm impressed none the less." Anyways he texted 3 days later and I would frequently stop by journeys to see him. So long story short... 2 years later and he gave me an engagement ring. He's an idiot but I love him. That boy's name is James Welch❤❤ and I couldn't be happier. Thanks smashing pumpkins

Man I miss the 90's. I never amounted to much in high school. Went into the Army after to escape the small town life. No girls, no popularity, just a few friends but I never thought I would miss it this much. There's a certain aura to the 90's that I think was the last unique decade. Life seemed so much easier. The music was better. We still had a bit of innocence then. We had to spend time together in order to be social. Now it's gone and so is the part of my life I never thought I would miss.

I was born in 1979, I was a teenager when this song was released. I miss those years so much, my mom gave me Mellon Collie and Infinite Sadness when I turned 16, and I would listen to the album every night... planning my future, wondering how my life would turn out to be...

I think the 1979 isn't a reference to the time period but to the year the kids in the video were born. It's about their generation. They were teens in the 90s, and were neither Gen X nor millennials - stuck in their own time warp in between. So the video depicts 90s teens still overshadowed by the Gen X culture and legacy.

The kids of the social media generation don't know how bad they have it. Everything is a contest, everything is about who has the best photo, the best life, the best pair of shoes. The 90s and everything before 2010s really were THE days to cherish. Nobody was in a competition, we were all running our own races, living in the moment. Bliss.

I'm the turd sitting in the shower kissing his girlfriend. We were extras and the director saw us cuddling by craft services and asked us to be in that scene. It was only the 2nd time we'd kissed. I also started that pit in the living room because i didn't really like the Smashing Pumpkins at the time. I liked minor threat and opp ivy and we had to shoot that living room scene for over 5 hours. Billy Coorgan yelled "we don't like mosh pits at our shows and we don't want them in our videos". Everyone froze like kids being reprimanded by the principal. It's completely surreal to see this video 20 years later. Still close friends with her and we revisited the video the other day. Such a great song!!

People who pretend to judge this music as "old" dont really understand music and definitely have no concept of time. 200 years from now, when we're all gone, when our music heros are gone, with all the technology available, kids will easily flip through two centuries of music catalogs (and will definitely like SP) to pick what they like. They will show their friends and they'll go "Wow this song's beautiful. Who are they"? - "They're called Smashing Pumpkins, from 200 years ago".
Get over your concept of "old" music. Good music is timeless
