You're cut in half,
they are trying to help each other to get out of the cage, they are fighting cuz one half always says I cant.

To me the CAGE represents a mental illness which the "Father' is suffering from...He is trapped in his own cell, in his own mental prison, maybe Schizophrenia, maybe Depression.....for the loving "Daughter" the only way to connect with her Dad is by playing along, she is always trying to take him out that cell, out of that situation....in the end, no matter how hard she tries to save him, he just gives up on life....I know this because I've been there.

So many people calling him a pedophile because of this video but all I see is.

A girl who has been stuck in a cage for so long and finally someone is there with her and she's scared because she doesn't know what he's gonna do but all he's doing is trying to help her and she keeps hurting him and eventually she escapes but is sad she left him behind and goes back for him but can't get him out

It finally makes sense to me. In dance moms, Maddie explains that she was playing the part of a wolf and he was a man. Her being a wolf represents her being strong and independent, and Shia tries to connect with the wolf. The wolf is resistant and does not want to let him in because if she does she’ll have something to lose. Near the end of the video she finally connects with him and she goes onto leave the cage, but he can’t. This represents her losing someone she cares abot

Olivia McDonald

People's interpretation of this video speaks on their mindset. I am a victim of abuse and never once felt like this has undertones of pedophilia. This was a father daughter struggle in my mind. This video is absolutely beautiful. Not saying that's what it's about but that's how I perceived this art. It's as if she needs him but he can't break free of his own prison.

I always felt that this was a father and a daughter. The father loves his daughter very much but he fights a form of addiction, which is represented by the cage. Even though it hinders the daughter’s life, he wants her to stay in the cage with him because he thinks he can’t escape even though he can. The daughter knows it’s wrong and she wants her dad to the leave the cage but stays with him because she loves her dad so much. In the end, the addiction takes his life, leaving his daughter at the bars and now she will either leave it or get trapped in it like her dad.

Kortni Edwards

It took me years to really understand what this song and this performance meant... I almost wish I was still ignorant. This is so truly heartbreaking.. To finally give yourself to someone only to realize they can't break free from their own cage to be with you... That decision to stay locked up with them or to break free is immeasurably difficult. I wish I didn't relate to this.

Catelyn Is a Mango

Catelyn Is a Mango
If you’re confused;

The child is youth - free and happy. The man is maturity - caged in society (society’s expectations is the cage). Maturity wants the freedom of youth back, so he follows youth around, hoping that he can be youth again. But the expectations of society don’t allow him to be himself, aka out of the cage, but youth can. She can be herself. She can go out of the cage. Youth even tries to help maturity, to tell him that it’s ok to be yourself, but the society is too strong, making maturity desperate. So he follows youth around, holding her so wherever she goes, he goes (and no it’s not pedophelia). But even with maturity’s best efforts, the peer pressure of society keeps him in, making him realise that he is stuck there for the rest of his life, and is too scared to leave. We can see that he can leave at 3:03 , but doesn’t have the confidence to leave, he hesitates and moves back. Youth tries everything to help maturity, but his fears (of judgement and loss of reputation) take over him.

I don't get any pedophile vibes from this, I don't see where people get that?
To me this portrays a toxic abusive relationship. She is the abusive one, a child dancer because she's the "childish" one playing with his head and heart.
He is afraid of her, but also reaches out for her because without her, he is all alone.
She can come and go as she pleases but she stays with him at times because she has him trapped and relies on bringing him down to being herself up.
At the end I sort of get the feeling she's realized what she's doing so she tries to set him free, but she can't because you never think to build a door when you're trapping someone.

It is revolting that Sia had to apologize because people thought this signified pedophilia. If you have a dirty mind, that's your problem. Sia's content is powerful, and always has a message. Very idiotic for people to say that.

Making the Case

Making the Case
I think this is about how parents (or father, in the case of this video) can make children feel trapped in the cage of a toxic home. They're forced to endure their endless cycle of anger, guilt, and apologies. Yet, once a child manages to escape that cage, where their parent no longer has control, they can sometimes see their parent for what they are: a fragile human trapped within their cage and unable to get out. They might try to help them, but sometimes they're impossible to help. Therefore, they build tough skin and elastic heart, which allows them to find the empathy through the humanity and flaws they see in parents they once believed were their only world.

This is an incredibly powerful piece. There's so much within the dancing that adds to the song itself that it just screams conflict, absolution, and despondency. To fight with oneself internally, to have to find absolutes but never find common ground, and to give up so totally as to have one's inner child screaming for one's adult self to escape the cage, but the adult self being so broken that it can't even find freedom when the answer is pulling it towards the exit... whuff. Beautifully danced, performed, produced, and sung.

So I watched the interview with Maddie, the girl in the video. Apparently she's supposed to represent a werewolf, and they've been living in the cage together for a year or something. I thought that was interesting! EDIT: I found out that that must have been only what they told Maddie. The video is actually representing Sia's relationship with her own father. They both suffer/suffered from mental illness, which is what the cage represents. Except that Sia "escaped," basically, learned to overcome her mental illness, but she couldn't help her father, who was old and set in his ways, and their relationship suffered due to their mental illnesses.

This is truly a piece of art. From what I've read of the comments it has become obvious that this video touched many people, and almost everyone perceived it differently. The interpretations of the video have ranged from addiction, or mental illness to abusive relationships between family members, or lovers. What a touching piece of work.

Emily Claire

Emily Claire
I see it as the cage representing either addiction or depression. The fact that she's a younger girl represents her innocence or early stages of addiction/depression. They're both trying to escape the cage but the man is too far gone for her to try and get him out. When she leaves the cage the first time, he is upset and screaming because he's trying to get out and doesn't want to be left behind. He then slowly realizes that he cannot escape, hence him trying less and less to get out. But she still continues to try and try to get him out even though he's done trying.

For the dull people who think the video is weird or stupid: When Sia was young, she and her father had a mental disorder. The cage represents the illness. Her father and her would fight and then Sia escaped the illness leaving her father behind. She notices he has different side- crazy, mad, and depressed. She tries to help him but ultimately he is left with the illness. Shia's and Maddie's character are both her father and Sia.

James Stratton

I think the video is about the rocky relationship between a father and a daughter. The father is struggling to provide for his daughter and show her the love she deserves and often contradicts her dreams, causing them to butt heads. Once the daughter is older, she becomes successful and escapes the prison of ignorance, pressure and boundaries which have trapped the father and her. The Daughter matures and realizes that her father never truly wanted to hurt her, but may have been ultimately skeptical of her ambitions, possibly fearing that he would lose her in the process. The daughter returns and enlightens the father. The father then realizes that he has been a ball and chain on his daughter, rather than a leg to stand on, and he was the only thing that ever stood in her way. The Daughter tries to help the father, but fails. The father decides that it is best for the daughter to leave him in the prison and refuses to leave because if he does, he may burden her even more. However, The father does not realize that the daughter still needs him.

After looking at this video, reading comments, and listening to the lyrics so many times, I think I've found it. The video really captures the meaning of having an Elastic heart. Shia represents our ego, while Maddie represents our basic instincts, or more like our 'will'. The both of them are the 'human heart'. The cage is self restraint, to keep them within oneself and under society's influence, the 'thick skin'. Both seem to fight each other but in the end, the will is willing to go outside, but the heart remains planted. Maddie got out of the cage, but Shia didn't, or more like refused. In all, according to the video and lyrics, to have an elastic heart is to bounce back from our failures, so that once we fall or we lose our will at some point, our hearts won't be broken. Pull it enough, sure it'll break, but at least it's more stretchy this way... At least, that's my interpretation of it.

rachel Shenk

No one gets it but Maddie is Sia's mini me and Shia was playing Sia's father. Sia's dad had a drinking problem that's why she acts so scared of him and in the end she loves him so she tries to pull him out of his Drinking addiction but he won't fit through the cage.
