This was meant to portray Sia's young life in an abstract sense. Maddy is acting out the story.

Maddie is just insanely good. I can't believe I just saw a human being literally dancing with his face. The music is awesome, like everything coming from Sia, I actually listened to this song back when it released, on radio, but never saw the video. This video gave a whole another dimension to the music.

The meaning: the first part is slow because she's slowly becoming depressed. She's beating herself up and starts nodding her head, trying to act like nothing's happening and trying to get herself back to normal. The pointing represents the way people are wondering what's going on with her, noticing and pointing at her. She then sucks her thumb but eventually pulls it away to represent a loss of innocence and childhood as she gets sadder and more heartbroken. When she eventually sinks into full on depression, she starts rubbing her hand over her mouth to represent putting on lipstick and eventually her whole face in makeup. She then smiles very quickly like the makeup made it better, but she begins to frown and taps her face so it goes away. She then starts fixing herself up again, fake smiling, and the motion she makes as if putting something in her mouth are pills/drugs. She then waves her hand around her face by her nose for smoking. Then she's bathed in purple light which represents getting high/drunk, talks to her foot because she's wasted and alone and doesn't have anyone to talk to. You can see a tattoo on her hand that says "don't think", because that's what happens when you're high, and another that says "whatever dude" because you stop caring when you're drunk. She goes offscreen and comes back to reality after it wears off. She touches her face, slightly disoriented, then tries to wake herself up, as if she's in a dream, (reality is the dream for her) by pulling at her eyes and pushing her lips. She starts eating, binging and taking pills, then pulls it back out as if to throw up (bulimia). She screams in frustration then slowly goes into a daze when she starts spinning, as if the shock of her situation and the heartbreak is too much. The hands are her mind and her mental disorders, trying to keep her awake by pulling at her eyes, then realizing that won't work and pulling her ears into a fake smile to pretend she's okay. When they make swimming type motions it's as if she can't breathe and is trying to, then the hands cover her mouth which is like her mental disorders telling her to keep quiet and pretend it's alright. When she gets lifted up it's a suicide attempt (hanging), her feet get incredibly pale and white but the attempt fails or she stops herself. Then she begins to move her hands violently, fear and frustration and anger taking over, the scissors most likely representing cutting and her eating her hand as if to say shut up, don't cry. She's in pain, repeating the motions, until she desperately does more of the eating motions, taking pills, and the lighting becomes purple again because she's high. She starts laughing almost desperately because she's under drugs, before coming back to reality. This time she's in serious shock at herself and the world, staring at her hand in disbelief and looking incredibly upset and out of place, too used to being high and/or drunk and the pain hits her full on. She pulls a finger down her face for a tear, starts stuffing her hand in her mouth to make herself stop, before punching herself in the face which puts her finally back in the real world, and starts staring open-mouthed, stunned, at the mess she's become.

this looks like what having an anxiety attack feels like. Sometimes I just can't keep myself from crying and shaking when I feel out of control, but there's such a stigma about mental illness that pressures you to keep it all bottled up. but sometimes it just feels like something is clawing at your eyes, sometimes at your heart, it hurts to breathe, and every muscle feels like it's not yours, kind of like someone is trying to take control of you. but anxiety is like the other pair of hands. we have to recognize that it isn't part of us, it's something that creeps up behind you and forces itself.

In an age of manufactured music, Sia is one of the most talented and honest artists of our time.
In an age of dance fads, I like how Maddie just expresses unfiltered emotion. A perfect fit for Sia's music.
This is not really my style of dance or music, but you have to respect quality.

Its Just Jackie

Its Just Jackie
People look at this and say "it's just a dumb girl doing a stupid dance" but no one truly listens and watches. This is honestly a piece of art because it represents what her younger self went through, because she was diagnosed with lots mental disorders. She did a fantastic job at displaying that.

Why I think this is interpreting is her left hand is like her mental illness, depression, anxiety, etc. and this hand is forcing her to do bad things, and making her life miserable. And her right hand is kind of like a friend who is trying to help and stop the left hand. But later in the she gets worse and starts attacking the right hand, and that's why she's apologizing saying sorry. And the right hand punches her to say, "snap out of it." And she forces a smile on her face. But the left hand kicks in and she doesn't know which side to choose at the very end

I don't know why, but when the hands covered her mouth, I thought of anxiety / suffocation. And when it pulled her up and she came back down I thought of a suicide attempt, or a suicidal thought. And then when she pulled at her face, I imagined her trying to pull off her face because she's insecure about her appearance, while the picking and scratching was some type of recovery from drugs. Then when she punched herself I thought of self harm and/or someone abusing her. At the end, I pictured those clown things that you throw the ball in their mouths at the festivals. That represented something to do with being exposed to things like abuse, ect, that makes her vulnerable to reality during early childhood.

I honestly think that these types of video's don't have one story behind it. Like, for Sia, this has a personal meaning to her, and because it's so complex and has so many different varieties of actions, it makes other people generate their own personal meaning by what the acting represents to them. For example, if you're someone who has struggled with anxiety, you may view the fast and seemingly confusing gestures to somehow tie with you're own experiences of anxiety. Like when the hands cover her mouth; that may express the feeling of being suffocated / having an anxiety attack.

Just ... urgh, Sia makes masterpieces out of anything, I swear X'D

what i see in shortfrom:
-a girl didnt get to enjoy much of her childhood. (she even sings it, it seems a little rough how her hands control her; her thumb gets ripped out of her mouth, she puts on makeup)
-she starts to suffer from depression (her expressions seem sad, her smiles seem forced; she tries to supress her depression to make other people believe that she is perfect and happy)
-she starts doing drugs and drinking alcohol (notice the tatoos on her hand? "dont think" and "whatever dude" which means that on theone hand she wants to do her duty but on the other hand she wants to let our her emotions and drown her sorrows in alcohol)
-he addiction takes control over her (the hands that try to shut her mouth and almost choked her)
-she gets more and more addiccted and depressive. at the begiinning she liked the fact that she was able to flee from rreality but now she is scared (she bites the hand with "what ever" which keeps feeding her pills) i love this part of the video. its so touching and emotional and everyone who has ever been addicted to something will be able to empathize. the video ends with the "whatever dude" hand punching her face => her addiction made her mentally ill

I think that this video trilogy (Chandelier,Elastic Heart & Big Girls Cry) is absolutely amazing and there is a lot of deep meanings behind it.. But everyone see what they see and everyone think why they think ...
And Sia..I think she is the only one who knows the real meanings.

The Red Plumbob

The Red Plumbob
My video interpretation: Her hands represent the sides of the brain. Right-creative and sensible, Left-logic and under control. She is dealing with depression but the left hand wants to be a grownup and pretends to be okay, while the right hand wants to cry it out like a child would (her hands are fighting with each other). So she starts taking medication to keep her thoughts under control and can't tell anyone (when she talks to her foot). She tries to ignore what people say (when she desperately covers her ears) but gets lost inside her own mind (when she seems to be rolling) and looks for help (the other hands) they try to help by making her seem happy but they overwhelm her and end up suffocating her (when the hands cover her mouth) making her feel lonelier and she attempts suicide but fails. After that she hits rock bottom and takes more pills which make her "happy" (when she's laughing a lot) now she doesn't care about pretending to be okay (when she attempts to eat her left hand) but she loses control and ends up taking an overdose in an attempt to look okay (when her left hand punches her in the face) and she ends up delusional, we don't see her hands anymore, her mind is lost.

Tabitha Akers

Tabitha Akers
This song's meant to be about being 'a tough girl' who's 'soul aches' inside right? I think the girls hands represent the thoughts she wants to say that try to escape and she tries to keep them inside so she wipes her mouth or tries to swallow/ bite her hands and keepthem down. But they dominate her senses seen when they cover her ears, eyes, nose and brain and smother her. The stranger's hands represent society's/ other people's expectations in not being able to cry in front of people and keeping bad thoughts to yourself, hence why the hands at 2:09 try to stop her from talking.

all I can really take from this video is that it's hard to keep yourself from crying and smiling through it just really eats you up more and more. You see several times how she's close to crying, then she smiles again to keep her from falling apart, but it's doing the opposite. Then the part with the hands is really her killing herself because she keeps hurting herself with bottling things up.

I'm probably wrong though lol.

The level of stupid in some of these comments is depressing.
A) Maddie is not a "weird" girl. If you feel that way, it's because she's doing a good performance. That's the point. Seriously, it's incredible that people can't understand that!
B) What do you mean you don't understand what the video's about? It's not really "about" anything - there's no plot-line. It is expression. It is emotive. It is about madness and depression and supposed to be uncomfortable.
C) This performance is incredible. It's mature and it's so detailed. Maddie portrays so much in every single isolation - she tells a million stories. I think this is the most impressed I have been with her.

Obviously everyone has the right not to like it, but do so in a constructive way. Most of the comments here are so dumb it's just people being completely brainless and not knowing what on earth is going on. Go and watch naked girls grinding on rappers if this baffles you too much.

I think anyone who finds Sia's videos "odd" " "horrible"  "A joke" etc.. truly do not understand the story and pain behind it all. These videos are an expression of what Sia and many others have and are still going through. Depression, addiction, lack of self identity and utter madness. Sia has taken the chaos that goes on in an unhealthy mind and beautifully expressed it through her videos. Both Sia and Maddie are truly amazing artists and I hope to see much more from them.
